Speaker of Parliament Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne has informed Parliament of the Supreme Court’s determination on the Chartered Institute of Media Professionals of Sri Lanka Bill.
The Supreme Court determined that several clauses of the Bill are inconsistent with the Constitution and require the special majority under Article 84(2), unless amended or omitted as specified by the court.
Clauses 3.1, 4.0 and 5.4(b) were found to be inconsistent with Articles 12(1) and 14(1)(g), or Article 12(1), of the Constitution.
The court determined that the remaining clauses are not inconsistent with the Constitution.
The Speaker subsequently ordered that the full Supreme Court determination be included in the Official Report of the day’s parliamentary proceedings.
