A group of 22 Buddhist monks arrested over a large-scale drug smuggling operation are scheduled to be produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today (02).

The suspects were taken into custody at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on April 25 after arriving from Thailand with 112 kilograms of “Kush” cannabis and “Hashish,” valued at over Rs. 110 million.

Investigations have revealed that another monk, identified as Amithananda Thero, had allegedly masterminded the operation. He was later arrested while hiding at a temple in the Gampaha area and is due to be produced before court tomorrow (03).

Police have also uncovered evidence suggesting previous drug smuggling activities linked to the same suspect.

Additionally, another individual accused of aiding the operation has been arrested in Athurugiriya.

The Police Narcotics Bureau stated that the 22 monks, who were detained for seven days under detention orders, are being produced in court following the completion of initial investigations.
