Sri Lanka’s growing gaming industry is set to make waves on the international stage this September, as Mogo Games, an indie game studio under TV Derana, showcased its upcoming title, ‘Song of Kings’, at the Tokyo Game Show 2025.
With a team of around 20 passionate developers, Mogo Games has been creating PC, mobile, and web-based games for local and international audiences. With Song of Kings, the studio is aiming higher than ever – bringing a uniquely Sri Lankan-inspired fantasy experience to players worldwide.
Planned for release in mid-2026, the game tells a fictional story based on Sri Lanka’s mythological past. In ancient times, Yakshas and humans coexisted in harmony until betrayal drove the Yakshas back into their hidden realm. Years later, a young Yaksha of royal blood accidentally returns to the human world, only to be captured by a human king. Escaping captivity, the child must navigate dangerous lands, solve ancient puzzles, and uncover his destiny to restore peace between Yakshas and humans.
“We wanted to bring something uniquely Sri Lankan to the global stage,” says the Mogo Games team. “By using the well-known Yaksha masks and cultural motifs as inspiration, we’ve created a fantasy world that blends heritage with international standards of gameplay, art, and music.”
Built in Unreal Engine 5, Song of Kings is a 2.5D puzzle-platform adventure game that will launch first on PC, with future plans for console releases on Xbox and PlayStation. Players will step into the role of the young Yaksha, experiencing not just his journey but also the rich cultural undertones woven into the environments, characters, and soundtrack.
One of the biggest challenges for the team has been breaking new ground, as no other Sri Lankan games have made an international impact before. “We didn’t have much experience at the start, but through research and self study, we built the knowledge and confidence needed to create Song of Kings,” the team explained.
Mogo Games has already released several smaller mobile and web-based titles, including games inspired by Sinhala and Tamil New Year and Vesak. With Song of Kings, however, the studio hopes to establish Sri Lanka as a name in the global gaming industry. The team has also begun early work on their next big project, continuing to expand their creative vision.
Fans can already show their support by adding Song of Kings to their Steam wishlist, a move that will help the indie studio push the game further on the international stage.
As Sri Lanka’s first attempt at breaking into the global video game market with such cultural depth, Song of Kings could mark a new beginning for the nation’s gaming industry.
