The Director General of the National Institute of Education (NIE), Prof. Manjula Vithanapathirana, has temporarily stepped aside pending an inquiry into the Grade 6 English learning module.

Education authorities stated the move was taken to allow an independent investigation into an inappropriate web reference included in the material.

The Ministry of Education has suspended distribution of the module and launched an internal inquiry.
