The Kandy Municipal Council has decided to ban pavement trading in the city with effect from 1 January. 

Mayor Chandrasiri Wijenayake stated that the move aims to protect the city’s appearance and reduce congestion. 

He noted that traders were given more than five months to clear their goods after a council resolution was passed six months ago. 

The grace period ends on 31 December and will not be extended. 

The council has identified between 60 and 80 pavement traders currently operating in Kandy.
