SJB wants MPs’ security issue taken up

  • Gen. Secy. claims no action so far

The main Parliamentary Opposition, the SJB, stated the issue of providing security for Parliamentarians would have to be taken up again, as no action has been taken so far, despite previous assurances given by the Speaker of the Parliament.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunathilleka said that although the matter had been raised with the Speaker, Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya, and even discussed in the Parliament earlier, there was no progress. “There has been no action so far. We will need to talk about this again. This was even taken up in the Parliament,” he said.

Multiple attempts to contact the Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ananda Wijepala proved futile.

Opposition parties including the SJB had earlier requested the Speaker and the IGP to ensure adequate security for MPs last year (2025). Karunathilleka said at that time that both the Speaker and the IGP had responded positively and acknowledged the concerns raised by the Opposition. The IGP had subsequently informed that the Police would first conduct formal threat assessments before assigning security to MPs. The issue was discussed at a meeting chaired by the Speaker in October 2025, convened at the request of Opposition parties including the SJB, following the assassination of Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairperson Lasantha Wickramasekara.

The Opposition has repeatedly criticised the Government’s decision to scale down personal security for legislators under fiscal restraint measures.
