Sri Lanka faces shortage of over 1,100 specialist doctors

Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa informed Parliament that Sri Lanka currently lacks 1,139 specialist doctors, with only 2,042 serving in 134 key hospitals. 


From 2020 to 2024, 570 specialists left due to retirement, resignations, or no-pay leave. 


A significant portion of the current workforce is nearing retirement age.
