The Ministry of Fisheries has estimated flood-related losses to the fisheries sector at more than Rs. 7.6 billion, with aquaculture accounting for the bulk of the damage.
Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekar stated that losses in aquaculture were estimated at Rs. 5.85 billion, while coastal fisheries losses stood at Rs. 1.8 billion.
He announced a recovery plan including vessel repairs and replacements, assistance for damaged fishing gear, support for aquaculture producers and access to low-interest loans.
The ministry said relief would be prioritised for the most affected fishermen and enterprises.
