UDA to remove ‘unsafe constructions’ per complaints

26 Mar 2024 | BY Buddhika Samaraweera

The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing stated that if a complaint is received regarding an unsafe construction in any area, the Urban Development Authority (UDA) will take necessary steps to remove them.

Colombo Municipal Commissioner Bhadranie Jayawardhana had recently said that nearly 150 unsafe constructions had been identified within the Colombo City limits.

When queried by The Daily Morning about the measures that are being taken regarding such constructions, the subject Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that he was not aware of the alleged 150 unsafe constructions in Colombo. However, he mentioned that the UDA would take necessary steps based on the complaints received regarding such constructions.

"The UDA usually receives complaints about such unsafe constructions. According to the complaints received, steps are taken to remove them. Anyone can submit complaints regarding such constructions in any area. For example, the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) can complain about this matter (unsafe constructions in the City of Colombo) to the UDA."

Multiple attempts to contact the UDA Director General Prasad Ranaweera proved futile.

The CMC had recently stated that they had initiated a special survey to find out whether more than the prescribed capacity of construction had been done in the Colombo 07 (Cinnamon Gardens) area. Jayawardhana told The Daily Morning at that time that their aim was to identify newly built constructions in the area and place them under the relevant tax schemes.
