  • To adapt other countries ‘ economic ideas

In the current economic context, the only way for Sri Lanka to thrive and the people to stay out of poverty is to make the country an entrepreneurial State, the Sarvajana Balaya political coalition claimed.

Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP) Leader and Sarvajana Balaya coalition member, entrepreneur Dilith Jayaweera made these remarks during the first public rally held by the alliance yesterday (18), where he stressed that improving the people’s lives should become the priority of any government and that a government with no such plan does not deserve the public’s trust. He opined that Sri Lanka has functioned during the past 75 years not based on mere concepts, but how Governments have in reality run the country.

“In this competitive world, we need to look at other ideas and how other countries work. We need to adopt them in a manner that suits us, and go forward. Sri Lanka needs to become an entrepreneurial State. There is no other way,” he observed, adding that welfare programmes such as Samurdhi do change people's lives.

Addressing the rally held in Nugegoda, Jayaweera further said that in a context where a family cannot live without at least Rs. 100,000 in terms of the monthly income, the coalition will put forward a plan to increase every household’s income to that level. “Our programme is a strategic one,” he said, noting that the coalition’s sustainable economic revival plans will take into account how other countries have succeeded in improving the people’s economies amidst obstacles.
