Sri Lanka and Bhutan have agreed to strengthen cooperation in education, higher education and vocational training following a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Bhutan’s Minister for Education and Skills Development Yeezang De Thapa.

The meeting was held in Bhutan on 3 September on the sidelines of the Global Conscious Food Systems Summit 2026.

Both sides agreed to begin discussions towards finalising and signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on education and vocational training cooperation.

The proposed MoU could be implemented through a Secretary-level Joint Working Group to review progress and identify new areas of cooperation.

The discussions also covered university and academic exchanges, joint research, teacher training, sharing expertise and opportunities for Bhutanese students to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Sri Lanka, including medicine, dentistry and allied health disciplines.
