Sanitary napkin programme for schoolgirls to continue

24 Mar 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Government of Sri Lanka has decided to continue its sanitary napkin distribution programme for schoolgirls in 2026 to support uninterrupted education.

The initiative will benefit around 1.05 million students above Grade 6 in government and government-aided schools across the country. Each student will receive vouchers worth Rs. 1,440 annually to purchase sanitary napkins.

The proposal, approved by the Cabinet and submitted by Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya in her capacity as Education Minister, aims to reduce absenteeism and ensure menstrual health does not hinder girls’ education.
