The ‘Batalanda’ Commission report was presented to Parliament today (14) by Leader of the House, Minister Bimal Ratnayake.
The report describes the 1988–1990 period as one of Sri Lanka’s darkest eras, marked by JVP insurgency and state-led extrajudicial actions, including kidnappings, assassinations, and torture camps.
It highlights the government’s failure to prevent human rights abuses and its role in shielding perpetrators.
Key recommendations include legislative reforms, judicial oversight, accountability in law enforcement, and enhanced judicial powers to prevent future atrocities.
