The Department of Irrigation has issued a ‘Red’ flood warning for areas downstream of the Gal Oya, following the Senanayaka Samudraya reaching its peak capacity.

Heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the Gal Oya Basin has put the river under risk of major flooding if spill gates are opened. 

Residents and motorists in low-lying areas, including the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Damana, Ampara, and Kalmunai, are advised to take all necessary precautions against potential flooding.

Disaster Management authorities have been requested to take appropriate action.
