Issuing an Extraordinary Gazette notification, Sri Lanka has extended the ban imposed on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), and several other groups and individuals listed under Regulation 4(7) of the United Nations Regulations No. 1 of 2012.
The particular Gazette notification, dated 28 May, has been issued by the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Sampath Thuyacontha, as the Competent Authority appointed for the purpose of the United Nations Regulations No. 1 of 2012.
It further extends the freeze on all funds, other financial assets, and economic resources belonging to or owned or held by any natural or legal person, group, or entity designated and listed under Regulation 4 of the United Nations Regulations No. 1 of 2012. This has been issued to renew the list of banned organisations and individuals published in an earlier Extraordinary Gazette notification issued in February this year.
The said Gazette notification contains a list of the groups and individuals who will continue to be banned in Sri Lankan territory, including the LTTE, TRO, Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam, National Council of Canadian Tamils, World Tamil Movement, and the Tamil Coordinating Committee.
Last year (2024), the Council of the European Union (EU) also renewed the proscription of the LTTE in the European Union for a further period of six months, following a request made by certain parties including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sri Lanka. The EU also renewed the list of persons, groups, and entities set out under Common Position 2001/931/CFSP with the aim of combating terrorism, and the LTTE continues to be banned in the EU for another six-month period.
