Prof. Suranjith Seneviratne appointed UK’s SLMDA Prez

Professor Suranjith L. Seneviratne has been appointed as the President of the Sri Lanka Medical and Dental Association (SLMDA) in the United Kingdom (UK). 

Having studied at St. Peter’s College in Colombo 04, Prof. Seneviratne completed his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery basic medical degree at the Colombo University’s Medical Faculty with first class honours, eight distinctions and 10 gold medals and was placed first in his year. 

He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree in internal medicine and trained in clinical immunology and allergy at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree in molecular medicine at Oxford University as a Commonwealth scholar. He is a clinical medicine researcher who has authored 303 journal publications and has an h-index of 53. He has published in Journals such as Nature, Science, Nature Medicine, Blood, the American Journal of Medical Genetics, the American Journal of Human Genetics and the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Prof. Seneviratne is an internationally renowned expert in immunodeficiency, autoimmune, allergic and mast cell disorders, and immunogenetics. He is the President of the UK-Sri Lanka Immunology Foundation, the latter an organisation that contributes to immunology and allergy education in Sri Lanka. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal College of Pathologists, the Royal Society of Medicine, the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka and the Ceylon College of Physicians.

The SLMDA was founded in 1982 and is the oldest Sri Lankan professional Association in the UK. Its main aim is to assist undergraduate medical and dental education in Sri Lanka. It is also a forum for Sri Lankan doctors and dentists to exchange scientific and clinical ideas at the annual academic sessions and to be a part of regular fund-raising social events. In 1990, the SLMDA was recognised as a charity by the Charity Commission for England and Wales.
