Thanking the Brampton Mayor?

25 May 2025

A banner was reportedly put up in the Mullivaikkal area in Mullaitivu expressing gratitude to Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown for setting up a Tamil genocide monument in Brampton, Canada, which has caused much controversy with the Sri Lankan Government and members of the Opposition raising objections.

After images of the banner had reached media institutions and questions were posed to the Mullaitivu Police, the Police had said that a team had been dispatched to the location to investigate the matter and that the banner had since been removed.

Sri Lanka has formally conveyed its strong objections to the opening of the monument in Brampton, Ontario, stating that such actions “complicate and undermine” the Government’s ongoing reconciliation and national unity efforts.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath had also summoned the Canadian High Commissioner in Colombo and expressed the Government’s concerns regarding what it described as “unfounded genocide allegations” and the establishment of the memorial in Canada.
