Fatal road accidents in Sri Lanka increased in 2025 compared to 2024, Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena stated in Parliament.
Fatal crashes rose from 2,403 in 2024 to 2,583 in 2025, with pedestrians and motorcyclists most affected.
Railway-related deaths declined slightly to 374 in 2025, but train accidents killed 14 elephants and injured eight during the year.
The Deputy Minister noted funds have been allocated for road and railway safety measures.
