The Parliamentary Pensions (Repeal) Bill has been passed in Parliament without amendments, abolishing pensions for Members of Parliament.
The Bill was presented on 7 January by Harshana Nanayakkara, Minister of Justice and National Integration.
It was challenged before the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka, which ruled that none of its provisions are inconsistent with the Constitution and that it could be enacted with a simple majority.
Following the second reading debate, 154 MPs voted in favor and 2 against.
The Bill was then approved at the third reading without amendments.
