The United Nations has expressed concern over the deadly violence at Negombo Prison, which claimed at least 27 lives and left more than 100 people injured.

The UN welcomed the government's decision to appoint an independent committee to investigate the incident.

It stated that the tragedy highlights the need for continued investment in Sri Lanka's prison system, including addressing overcrowding and detention conditions.

The UN also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting prison reforms through technical cooperation.
