  • Opposition demands transparency

Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody firmly rejected claims of power cuts, insisting the Government has not imposed any such measures despite the deepening energy crisis, and asserting that the daily disruptions experienced by the public are merely the result of routine electricity breakdowns.

During yesterday’s (7) Parliamentary session, SJB MP Mujibur Rahman challenged the Government’s position, demanding to know why the public has not been clearly informed if power cuts are, in fact, being carried out. He pointed to mounting complaints from across the island of outages lasting an hour or more each day, raising concerns over transparency.

Hitting back, Jayakody accused critics of peddling misleading claims, arguing that breakdowns are a longstanding and unavoidable reality of the power system. He maintained that these interruptions are being deliberately mischaracterised, stressing that short-term outages must be correctly identified as “breakdowns” — not “power cuts.”
