Sri Lanka has achieved a significant clean energy milestone, with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) reporting an average of 70% electricity generation from renewable sources during June 2025.
This is the highest renewable share since the early 1990s, when the national grid was nearly fully hydro-powered, before transitioning to a mixed hydro-thermal system. The achievement is particularly notable as it occurred during a month of high electricity demand.
The CEB attributed this success to its consistent efforts in boosting renewable capacity, marking a major step in restoring sustainable energy dominance in the country’s power sector.
