Ousted Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly requested asylum in the United Kingdom, as confirmed by The Hindu. Accompanying her is her sister Rehana, who already holds U.K. citizenship.
Reports indicate that Sheikh Hasina, 76, and her sister were evacuated to India via a military helicopter.
Initial reports suggested her arrival in West Bengal, a state bordering Bangladesh. Contradictory reports, however, have indicated that she might be headed to the north-eastern state of Tripura.
The political upheaval in Bangladesh reached a fever pitch as protesters stormed the official residence of the Prime Minister today (05).
The protests, which have been ongoing for several weeks, have claimed the lives of nearly 300 people.
