The Ministry of Health noted that around 84% of Sri Lankans have expressed willingness to donate their eyes.
According to the Ministry, the National Eye Bank has received around 17,000 corneas over the past 15 years, supporting approximately 12,000 corneal transplant surgeries.
The Ministry further stated that between 4,000 and 5,000 corneas have also been provided to other countries based on international requests.
Health authorities noted that the National Eye Bank continues to receive demand from countries including Singapore and South Africa.
