The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has announced that it will carry out raids on wholesale and retail outlets until 30 April to prevent the hoarding of essential goods during the festive season.
Director of Consumer Affairs and Information, Asela Bandara, stated that inspections will target importers and wholesale dealers to ensure that stocks are not being withheld from the market. Officials will examine storage facilities to identify any attempts to artificially limit supply.
He further noted that retail outlets will also be monitored to prevent the sale of goods above controlled prices.
The CAA has also raised concerns over the repackaging of expired or near-expiry goods, a practice that tends to increase during festive periods. Special raids will be conducted to identify and take action against such violations.
In addition, inspections will focus on promotional sales organized for the New Year season to ensure compliance with consumer protection regulations.
These measures aim to safeguard consumers and maintain fair market practices during the busy festive period.
