The ‘Janathawadi Joint Opposition’, led by former Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris, has stated that it does not condone the removal of Venerable Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thero’s saffron robes.
In a statement, the group stated that action concerning Buddhist monks should be taken in accordance with the traditions and disciplinary rules of the Buddha Sasana.
It also stressed that prison authorities must respect Buddhist traditions and customs, while safeguarding the authority of the Chief Prelates of the Three Nikayas over the discipline of Buddhist clergy.
The group further stated that only the Nikaya to which a monk belongs has the authority to disrobe a member of the clergy.
