SLFP sounds Govt.’s death knell

SLFP sounds Govt.’s death knell

02 May 2025 | BY Sahan Tennekoon

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) claimed that the current National People’s Power (NPP)-led Government will not last long, as it has already failed to manage the country’s economic system within a very short period of time.

Addressing a public gathering organised by the party to mark the International Labour Day yesterday (1 May), former SLFP General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa stated that any government which fails to create new sources of income cannot do anything for the working class. He also claimed that the current Government has failed to manage the economy and address the real needs of the people. He further opined that electricity tariffs will definitely be increased by the Government after the upcoming Local Government (LG) Elections.

“The authorities have reportedly already been advised to raise the tariffs. Any government that does not create new income streams cannot do anything for the working class,” he further claimed.

Yapa also noted that the SLFP will rally people against this Government through democratic means, and that the upcoming LG Elections will be a turning point. “We know only one thing. This Government will not last long. Many benefits for the working class have been cut, and more will be removed in the future,” he alleged.
