The Government is exploring the implementation of stricter regulations on children's use of digital devices and social media, amid rising concerns over exploitation, addiction, and behavioral issues associated with unsupervised access, stated Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj.
Addressing the issue, Minister Paulraj explained that authorities are currently deliberating a range of measures, including limiting mobile device usage among young children and restricting minors from accessing certain social media platforms.
A special committee, chaired by Prime Minister (PM) Harini Amarasuriya, has been appointed to develop comprehensive policy recommendations to improve child safety in the digital environment.
The Minister revealed that some of the proposals under consideration include banning digital screen access for children under the age of five and prohibiting social media use for those under 12, with the aim of safeguarding children from potential risks and promoting healthier digital habits.
