This week’s column is all about good news in the form of food news – and there’s certainly a lot of deliciousness to unpack! Here goes:
Plates: first up, I have some excellent news for dessert lovers – Gorgeous Cakes and Desserts is now on PickMe Food from Tuesdays to Sundays, which makes it even easier to enjoy Vyomi’s scrumptious creations whenever the cravings hit!
The last time I ordered a cake from her, I ate half of it entirely on my own. It was that delicious, dear reader. And with Vyomi, this deliciousness is not a one-off: she has never disappointed over the years.
Tip: try the coffee cake – an irresistible concoction of classic coffee buttercream, drizzled with salted caramel, and topped with roasted cashew – and the fabulous chocolate pineapple gateau.
Plates: Colombo Folks, which opened on Esther Avenue off Park Road just over a month ago, is fast shaping up to be a hangout hotspot in the city. With great food, BYOB, and a relaxing and casual vibe, this is a lovely space in which to unwind.
I visited recently and was very impressed by the welcoming ambience and the layout of the place – it features indoor air-conditioned seating for around 16 or so and a larger outdoor seating area upstairs which is beautifully lit.
Ambience aside, what really stands out at Colombo Folks is the food. I tried the seafood chop suey rice and couldn’t help having several servings – it was that delicious. The portion size is sufficient for three to four people and it’s a dish I will certainly return to.
I also tried the sizzling pepper beef, which is served on a hot platter at one’s table, and is well-prepared and quite tasty. On my next visit I plan to try the mixed grill platter, which is one of the fastest moving and best-loved dishes here.
The Colombo Folks menu features almost 70 dishes, from chicken, fish, cuttlefish, and beef to pork, prawns, rice, and noodles, so there will definitely be something to suit any diner’s palate here.
At the helm of Colombo Folks is Ashan Kumaratunga, who’s got the recipe right. With restaurant experience to his credit, he is hands-on at Colombo Folks to ensure everything runs just right.
Tip: there’s live music on Friday nights.
Plates: there are many culinary experiences unfolding at the Cinnamon Grand and Cinnamon Lakeside Hotels this month, from Spanish cuisine to Mother’s Day celebrations.
First up – which I’m most excited about – is the culinary journey through Spain being served throughout the month of May on Thursday evenings at The Dining Room, Cinnamon Lakeside. Featuring an impressive spread, the menu shines the spotlight on authentic Spanish dishes and offers a unique dining experience that’s not to be missed.
To celebrate Mother’s Day, Cinnamon Lakeside will be serving an elegant high tea at its Lobby Lounge on 10 and 11 May, featuring a great spread along with a special treat – with a family of four, mothers dine free.
The Dining Room is celebrating on Sunday (11) with an impressive lunch, featuring live entertainment and some grand prizes. Here too, with a family of four, mothers dine free.
Meanwhile the Cinnamon Grand will feature a host of special dining events on Sunday.
There’s ‘Mum Dines Free’ at Plates, between 12 noon and 4 p.m.; a special carvery buffet at Cheers from noon until 3 p.m., featuring delicious roasts and gourmet delights; a 20% discount offer on sawans from CG Flavors for those who prefer to enjoy Cinnamon flavours at home; and themed cakes, cupcakes, and chocolates at the Coffee Stop, which make for lovely gifts.
