Post-landslide aid: Walapane officials deny neglect

The Walapane Divisional Secretary (DS) Vijitha Munasinghe has rejected allegations that Napatawala Village residents who survived the landslide have been neglected and denied Government aid. Speaking to The Daily Morning, Munasinghe claimed that such neglect did not occur and that all affected individuals were duly aided and taken care of.

She reported that five houses in Napatawala Village were affected by the landslide. “Officials individually investigated each case and provided assistance to the villagers. The National Building Research Organisation and the Divisional Secretariat attended the site and took necessary actions. It is fake news that is being circulated. Government aid was provided to everyone affected in the Division,” Munasinghe further claimed.

The denial follows media reports on Tuesday (16) in which survivors of the deadly landslide in Napatawala accused the Government of failing to provide aid, leaving them without basic supplies or a formal assessment of their losses. In one statement, an individual identified as a father to four daughters has commented on their house being destroyed. Munasinghe countered this specific claim, claiming, “There is no such person as identified in the said area”.
