LOCAL SPORTS NEWS IN BRIEF: RI students win 32 medals and four championships at karate tourney

Students from Royal Institute (RI), Colombo secured 32 medals and four championships at the recently concluded Inter–International Schools’ Karate Tournament at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium. They managed to win 14 gold, four silver, and 14 bronze medals while becoming champions of the under-11, -12, -13, and -14 categories. The team competed under the guidance of coach Shihan Seeta Wijewardana.

The following students won championships:

Under-11 – Bhagya Leelarathna (Nugegoda branch)

Under-12 – Sanuli Nethara (Nugegoda branch)

Under-13 – Mahira Mariam (Maya Avenue branch) 

Under-14 – Saveen Imanga (Nugegoda branch)

By the end of the third day of the All-Island School Championship, athletes managed to create 12 new school competition records, as the boys set seven records and the girls set five.

Dineth Induwara Weeraratne of Leeds International School, Matara stood out among the athletes in this year’s tournament by setting a time of 10.69 seconds in the under-18 boys 100 m event and 21.73 seconds in the 200 m event.

Walala A. Rathnayake Vidyalaya’s D.M.I.D. Tharushi Karunaratne managed to attract the headlines among female athletes, as she claimed two new records by finishing the under-20 400 m event in 54.22 seconds and the 800 m event in 2.08.16 minutes.

By the end of the third day of this tournament, St. John’s College, Kurunegala  took the lead in the boys’ section of the school points table by getting 49 points. Lyceum College, Wattala, which was in the first place the day before, scored 39 points and retreated to second place. Rahula College, Matara has been ranked third on the list with 37 points.

Walala A. Ratnayake Vidyalaya has been able to further protect the lead in the girls’ division by getting 67 bonus points. Lyceum College, Wattala and Holy Cross College, Gampaha are in the second and third positions, respectively.

At the end of the third day of the tournament, the Western Province remains in first place in the provincial championship points table of the tournament with 651 points. 

With the participation of 4,700 athletes representing all nine provinces of the island, the closing ceremony of this year’s tournament will be held today (6) at 3 p.m. under the patron-ship of Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayanth.


Tharusha misses Sri Lankan record by 0.02 seconds

Sri Lanka’s Tharusha Dhananjaya clocked an impressive 21.99 seconds in the 200 m event at the “95 Kings of Field” indoor athletics championship held in France. Accordingly, Tharusha missed the domestic Sri Lankan record in the men’s 200 m event by 0.02 seconds. Tharusha, who is training in France, participated in the 200 m event held on Sunday (4). He ran in the third heat of the event and was able to win.

Nippon Paint Katukurunda Speed 2022 was held on 3 and 4 December at the Katukurunda Race Track. Ashan Silva was once again at his best, winning both the SL GT Cars (up to 3,500 cc) races and bagging the “Driver of the Day” award. 

Ahmed Sarfan clinched first place in the SL E Cars (up to 1,300 cc) category after a thrilling race which included 24 drivers.

The rest of the winners are as follows:

SL E Cars (up to 1,000 cc) – Adeesha Kithwith

SL H Honda Cars (up to 1,600 cc) – Viren Boteju
