24 Mar 2026 | BY Staff Writer

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has emphasised that food security remains a top government priority.

He instructed the Ministry of Agriculture and private fertiliser companies to ensure sufficient stocks are available to farmers during the 2026 Yala season.

The President noted that around 550,000 hectares of paddy will be cultivated, requiring 125,000 metric tonnes of urea. Current stocks stand at 68,000 metric tonnes, with 77,000 metric tonnes on order.

Officials discussed import plans, storage improvements, and credit facilities to maintain steady fertiliser supplies.

Minister K.D. Lalkantha and key agriculture and fertiliser company representatives attended the discussion at the Presidential Secretariat, according to the President’s Media Division
