Implementing anti-ragging law: BASL to seek judicial intervention?

06 May 2025

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) announced that it is considering seeking the intervention of courts to ensure the better implementation and enforcement of the provisions of the Prohibition of Ragging and Other Forms of Violence in Educational Institutions Act, No. 20 of 1998.

Issuing a statement, the BASL expressed concern over the recent incident of a suicide of a Sabaragamuwa University undergraduate, adding that such ragging, bullying and violence constitute inhumanity, brutality and a violation of basic human values and conduct.

The private and unofficial bar also noted that such had also been caused by the dereliction of duty by the relevant educational institution and that hence, such institutions too should be held accountable.

The BASL called on the responsible university authorities to take necessary preemptive action.
