President Anura Kumara Dissanayake spoke by phone with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of Qatar, to discuss the escalating tensions in the Middle East and their global implications.
During the call, President Dissanayake expressed concern for the approximately 150,000 Sri Lankans residing in Qatar and reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s support for the Gulf nation amid regional uncertainties.
The Emir briefed the President on the current situation, assuring him of the safety and well-being of all residents, including Sri Lankan nationals.
The leaders also addressed broader challenges, such as potential disruptions to global supply chains and energy markets, especially given the risks to key maritime routes like the Strait of Hormuz.
President Dissanayake highlighted the importance of international coordination to mitigate economic impacts, particularly for developing countries like Sri Lanka.
The Emir of Qatar reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to maintaining stable energy supplies despite ongoing regional issues, emphasizing its role as a reliable energy partner.
Both leaders expressed concern over regional and global stability and emphasized the urgent need for de-escalation, diplomatic dialogue, and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. President Dissanayake reiterated Sri Lanka’s support for peaceful engagement as the best way forward for lasting peace and stability.
