Easter Observance: Cardinal calls for world peace

06 Apr 2026 | BY Dilanthi Jayamanne

Colombo Archbishop His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said that global peace had been shattered and humanity was suffering due to the actions of individuals driven by a desire to dominate others.

Addressing the main Easter mass at Kotahena yesterday (5), he said that Christianity was not limited to rituals or reading scripture but was rooted in compassion and service to others.

“Let us pray, especially at this time, for world peace. Peace has been broken because of the selfishness of a single person driven by the desire to control the world, causing immense suffering to humanity. We must pray for a change in the hearts of such individuals and guide them away from destructive paths,” he said.

He added that Christianity was about love and responsibility toward others. “Christianity is not simply about offering prayers or reading sacred scriptures. It is about living with purpose, showing compassion to neighbours and serving others. There is a saying that leaders should serve their people. But today, many in power act as rulers rather than servants, driven by the pursuit of power,” he said.
