Central Bank of Sri Lanka Governor Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe has stated that essential economic policies must be implemented regardless of whether they are popular with the public.
Speaking at a lecture at the University of Kelaniya, he noted that the country may need to increase taxes depending on economic requirements, despite public opposition.
He also stressed that the Government must clearly explain the reasons and economic implications behind tax increases or reductions.
Weerasinghe warned that avoiding necessary policy decisions due to concerns over public opinion could have serious consequences for the country.
