  • To commence today at several locations in Colombo

Eggs will be sold at Rs. 55 at several locations in Colombo today (28) by egg producers for the public to purchase directly, said All-Island Egg Producers’ Association President Rathnasiri Alahakoon.

“We have made arrangements to sell eggs directly to consumers at Rs. 55 without the involvement of tertiary sellers which has caused disruptions in the industry. We will be distributing eggs at 40 places in Colombo and plans have already been made to transport stocks to Colombo,” he said while speaking to The Morning yesterday (27). Accordingly, he stated that the lorries transporting eggs would be placed at several locations in Colombo, selling eggs to the consumers directly.

He also added that plans have been made to expand this to other districts too after commencing it in Colombo today. “We are planning to initiate the same system in other districts after commencing the process in Colombo today,” said Alahakoon.

These eggs are set to be sold in crowded areas in Colombo such as the Colombo Fort Railway Station, Dematagoda, Dehiwala, Battaramulla, Nugegoda, Maharagama, the Meegoda and Narahenpita Economic Centres, the Junction near the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, and Homagama.

Furthermore, the Egg Producers' Association has decided to place lorries to sell eggs in Towns such as Wattala, Ja Ela, Ragama, Negombo, Kiribathgoda, Kadawatha and Peliyagoda.

Alahakoon stated that the decision to sell eggs at the lowest price possible was taken after a meeting with Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera on 21 December with egg retail prices in some areas reaching prices that the public cannot afford.
