The United Postal Trade Union postal had launched a 48-hour strike which started yesterday (7), to protest the government's decision to sell the postal offices in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.
The strike comes after the Cabinet spokesman, Minister Bandula Gunawardena, announced plans to hand over the Nuwara Eliya Post Office to the Taj Samudra Hotel as a hotel project.
The postal workers' union stated that they would launch an indefinite strike if the government did not heed its demands.
Accordingly, the government announced that it is selling the post offices because it is unable to maintain them.
