Waking up to the quiet charm of Rambukkana

Waking up to the quiet charm of Rambukkana

Rambukkana in the Sabaragamuwa Province is a town that is often overlooked. But The Sunday Morning Brunch recently visited Rambukkana, and it’s not a place we will soon forget.

Despite being often overshadowed by nearby Kegalle or the famed Pinnawala area, Rambukkana is a destination quietly brimming with charm, scenic beauty, and cultural intrigue. It’s the kind of place where time slows down just enough for you to breathe deeply and remember what it means to truly rest.

A place to lay our heads

On our excursion along roads less travelled to explore Rambukkana’s offerings, we found ourselves at Jetwing Wahawa Walauwa, a beautifully restored colonial mansion built in the 1870s and tucked beneath a serene canopy of coconut trees.

A harmonious blend of old-world grandeur and contemporary comfort, the property offers visitors a taste of heritage luxury. As you step through its antique wooden doors and across polished floors that have stood the test of time, you are greeted not only by the charm of its history but also by the warmth of its hospitality.

The walauwa is home to six suites, each meticulously designed to honour the history of the space while offering all the luxuries of a modern getaway. The grand suites are regal, featuring king-sized four-poster beds, ornate period furniture, and large living areas ideal for relaxation or quiet reflection. The en suite bathrooms are also a highlight, with their free-standing bathtubs framed by windows that open out to the lush garden beyond.

The walauwa is perfect for friends or family travelling together. Amenities on offer include air conditioning, high-speed Wi-Fi, handcrafted toiletries, plush bathrobes, and personal butler service to ensure your stay is seamless and indulgent from start to finish.

Dining is also a special experience, offering guests the choice of enjoying their meals in the spacious, open-style communal dining hall or under a canopy of stars for an unforgettable al fresco setting.

While the menu offers a variety of cuisines, it’s the local flavours that truly shine here. We were treated to a memorable dinner featuring an outstanding pandan-wrapped grilled fish and the traditional lunch showcases an impressive array of traditional Sri Lankan curries, including a rich, flavourful beef curry that will stay fondly in our memories for a long time.

Every meal at the walauwa feels less like dining out and more like sharing a lovingly prepared feast that celebrates the area’s culinary heritage.

A place to explore

Beyond the serenity and comfort of Jetwing Wahawa Walauwa itself, what truly enriches the experience is the opportunity to explore all that the surrounding region of Rambukkana has to offer. Travellers to Rambukkana are also perfectly placed to discover the cultural, spiritual, and natural wonders of the area.

For us, one of the most memorable highlights was our visit to the Elephant Freedom Project, located just a short drive away. This project is run by a passionate and dedicated few who care for two elephants in their charge.

The experience here is deeply personal and respectful, offering a more nuanced and ethical perspective on elephant interaction when compared to more commercial operations like the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. You don’t simply watch from afar; you learn, engage, and leave with a deeper understanding of what responsible wildlife tourism can look like.

Another meaningful stop on our itinerary was the Deliwala Kota Vehera temple, where we were able to view a sacred relic of Lord Buddha. What made this visit truly special was the rare opportunity to observe the relic in such close proximity, an experience that left a lasting impression on us. The temple’s quiet atmosphere and historical significance made it a profoundly grounding moment in our journey.

Several other significant cultural sites are also within reach. We were able to make a comfortable day trip to both Yapahuwa and Dambadeniya, two historic capitals of ancient Sri Lanka.

Although it is possible to visit both in one day, we recommend spreading them across two days if time permits, to fully appreciate the grandeur and detail each site has to offer. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about Sri Lanka’s rich past, these stops are more than worth your time.

Perhaps the most exhilarating adventure of our stay was the Ihala Kotte hike, which turned out to be an unforgettable highlight.

The trail led us through a working train tunnel – a surreal experience in itself – and out to a waterfall that could be viewed from within the tunnel. As a train thundered past while we stood safely tucked inside the tunnel walls, we were hit by a surge of adrenaline and awe.

It’s the kind of thrill that photographs can’t quite capture and words can only attempt to describe. If you have the chance, this is one excursion you absolutely cannot miss.

A place to get hands-on

On the final day of our stay, as one of the experiences offered to guests by Jetwing Wahawa Walauwa, we were introduced to yet another immersive local experience: a pottery-making class with local artisans.

Using traditional methods, we got hands-on with clay and learnt the careful process of shaping, spinning, and crafting. It was not only a fun and meditative way to close out our visit, but also a meaningful way to connect with the local community.

Jetwing Wahawa Walauwa makes a conscious effort to uplift surrounding villages by incorporating their skills and traditions into the guest experience, and it’s something that adds real depth and authenticity to the stay.

Whether you are wandering through ancient temples, connecting with wildlife in ethical ways, or simply soaking in the tranquillity of rural Sri Lanka, Rambukkana offers a rare kind of travel experience – unhurried, unfiltered, and unexpectedly unforgettable.

For those seeking a retreat that combines luxury with authenticity, and adventure with reflection, Rambukkana is more than worth the detour; it is a destination in its own right. It’s a place where time slows down, where nature and heritage coexist in harmony, and where meaningful encounters await at every turn.
