Several train journeys along the main line, which were temporarily suspended due to a train derailment and adverse weather conditions, resumed operations yesterday (23), the Department of Railways announced.
Accordingly, several trains operating between Kandy and Colombo Fort and vice versa functioned from 4.30 a.m. yesterday. Additionally, the Colombo Fort to Badulla train started at 5.55 a.m., the Kandy to Polgahawela train commenced operations, and two trains from Kandy to Badulla ran at 11.15 a.m. and 12.35 p.m., respectively. However, the train that departs Colombo Fort to Kandy daily at 7 a.m. did not operate yesterday.
Rail services between Kandy and Colombo were disrupted since 19 October owing to landslides and a train derailment. Due to heavy rains, the railway line between Rambukkana and Peradeniya experienced landslides and soil erosion at several locations, particularly between the Kadigamuwa and Balana Stations. This resulted in the cancellation of several train journeys. All passenger train services were canceled on Wednesday (22) as well.
Meanwhile, train operations along the coastal line have been disrupted due to a fallen tree between Katugoda and Galle. The ‘Sagarika’ train, which runs from Beliatta to Colombo, had to be halted due to the incident.
Elsewhere, an individual has died after being hit by a train travelling from Panadura to Puttalam, near the Wellawatte Railway Station, on Wednesday evening. At the time of the incident, the deceased was wearing black trousers and a white and light-blue short-sleeved shirt, and is believed to be around 60 years old, the Police stated. The body of the man has been placed at the morgue of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital, Kalubowila.
