The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal to submit Motor Vehicles (Drugs) Regulations No. 01 of 2025 to Parliament for approval. 

The regulations, published in Extraordinary Gazette Notification No. 2452/40 on 4 September 2025, address a loophole in the Motor Vehicles Act. 

While the Act allows police to present suspected drug drivers to a government medical officer, it did not specify the method of investigation or the amount of drugs constituting proof. 

The new directive, proposed by the Acting Minister of Transport, Highways, and Urban Development, enables the checking of drivers suspected of drug use.
