Hidden within the MJF Centre in Moratuwa, Dilmah Conservation’s open-air Butterfly Garden continues to provide a thriving sanctuary for some of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable butterfly species. Established in October 2011, the garden was created to support butterfly conservation while raising awareness of the island’s rich biodiversity.

Designed with carefully selected host and nectar plants, the garden offers a safe habitat where butterflies can feed, breed, and complete their life cycle. Over the years, it has become home to more than 67 butterfly species, representing a significant proportion of the 248 species recorded in Sri Lanka.

Beyond its conservation value, the Butterfly Garden serves as an educational space, encouraging visitors to appreciate the importance of protecting pollinators and the fragile ecosystems they support. More than a decade after its establishment, it remains a quiet reminder that meaningful conservation often begins with creating space for nature to flourish.
