- The Che Group to hold wildlife exhibition from 9-11 August
Marco Polo once hailed Sri Lanka as the most beautiful island in the world, a sentiment echoed by anyone who has been enchanted by its lush landscapes and vibrant biodiversity. The island’s verdant forests, cascading waterfalls, and meandering rivers form a rich tapestry of life that beckons both the casual observer and the dedicated explorer.
Yet, in our lives, how often do we truly pause to appreciate the intricate beauty of the natural world around us? For many, the answer lies not in direct experience, but in the captivating work of those who make it their mission to bring nature’s splendour into our view. Enter wildlife photography – a demanding, yet profoundly rewarding pursuit that transforms fleeting moments into timeless images.
At the heart of this endeavour is the Che Group, a collective of passionate wildlife photographers, whose love for nature drives them to endure countless challenges in their quest to document the wonders of the wild. Founded in 2017 by a group of friends reunited after a serendipitous meeting, the Che Group has grown from a small band of five into a dedicated team of 20.
Che Group President Dr. Asanga Fernando shared his insights on the unique allure of wildlife photography, saying it was not just about taking pictures. He added: “It’s about immersing oneself in the environment, understanding the behaviour of the animals, and capturing the essence of their existence. It’s a form of meditation, requiring patience, perseverance, and a deep connection with nature.”
The Che Group’s upcoming exhibition, ‘Earth’s Symphony’, embodies this philosophy. Scheduled to be held at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre’s Harold Peiris Gallery from 9-11 August, this exhibition promises to be a visual and emotional feast for all who attend. From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, visitors will have the opportunity to witness the fruits of the group’s labour – a stunning array of photographs that reveal the hidden rhythms of the natural world.
Dr. Fernando elaborated on the significance of the exhibition. “Our goal is to raise awareness about the beauty and fragility of wildlife and the environment. Through our photographs, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for nature and a commitment to its preservation. Each image tells a story, not just of the subject captured, but of the journey and the effort it took to capture that moment.”
Indeed, the stories behind these images are as compelling as the photographs themselves. “Picture a photographer, lying in wait for hours, silent and still, as a leopard emerges from the underbrush. Imagine the patience required to document the life cycle of a bird, from nest-building to the first flight of its chicks. Consider the courage needed to face the unpredictability of nature, whether it be the sting of a mosquito or the charge of an elephant,” Dr. Fernando described, detailing what to expect.
When talking about the inspiration behind some of these shots, he said: “These photographers are not mere observers; they are participants in the grand symphony of the Earth. We believe our cameras become a third eye, capturing what many of us might overlook or take for granted.” The Che Group’s dedication is evident in every frame, their passion palpable in every shot.
The exhibition will feature a wide range of photographs, each reflecting the diverse talents and perspectives of the group’s members. From the majestic to the minute, the serene to the dramatic, ‘Earth’s Symphony’ promises a rich tapestry of visual narratives that celebrate the splendour of Sri Lanka’s wildlife.
Dr. Fernando invited everyone to experience this celebration of nature. “Whether you are a seasoned wildlife enthusiast or someone looking to reconnect with nature, this exhibition has something for you. It’s an opportunity to see the world through the eyes of those who dedicate their lives to capturing its beauty, and to be inspired by their passion and commitment,” he said.
In a world where the pressures of daily life often disconnect us from the natural world, exhibitions like ‘Earth’s Symphony’ serve as a vital reminder of the beauty that surrounds us. They offer a moment of pause, a chance to refresh our tired eyes, and rejuvenate our minds.
So, as the Che Group prepares to unveil their first major triumph, let us join them in celebrating the song of Mother Earth. “Let us be captivated by the melody they have captured through their third eye, and be inspired to cherish and protect the natural world that is our home,” Dr. Fernando stated.
