Sri Lanka leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has etched his name into the history books by becoming the fastest player in One Day International (ODI) history to achieve the double of 100 wickets and 1000 runs.
The 27-year-old achieved the remarkable feat during the second ODI against Bangladesh at the R. Premadasa Cricket Stadium on Saturday (5).
Hasaranga reached the landmark in just 65 matches, eclipsing the previous record held by former South African all-rounder Shaun Pollock, who reached the mark in 68 games.
With this record, Hasaranga becomes the only 70th player in ODI history to enter the exclusive 100 wickets-1000 runs club.
While Hasaranga had already crossed the 1000-run mark during the first ODI of the ongoing series, he completed his 100th ODI wicket in the second match.
South Africa’s Pollock remains the only cricketer to have completed both milestones in a single ODI match.
Hasaranga, who made his ODI debut eight years ago, has become a key figure of Sri Lanka’s white-ball cricket setup with his impactful leg-spin and handy lower-order batting.
The ongoing ODI series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is now tied 1-1, setting the stage for a ‘winner-takes-all’ clash in Kandy on Tuesday (8).
