The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) is progressing with the Maha Oya Pumped Storage Hydropower Project, Sri Lanka’s first-ever “Water Battery.”
This 600 MW project will store excess solar and wind energy, ensuring grid stability and supporting the goal of 70% renewable electricity by 2030.
Located in Aranayake and Nawalapitiya, the project will reduce fossil fuel reliance and carbon emissions while providing a large-scale energy storage system.
CEB aims to secure international funding to minimize tariff impacts and drive economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
