Mahindananda Aluthgamage appeals 20 year sentence in SC

09 Jun 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Former Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Colombo High Court in May 2025 for causing over Rs. 53 million in losses through the unlawful purchase and distribution of 14,000 Carrom boards and 11,000 draughts boards during the 2015 presidential election, has filed an appeal in the Supreme Court (SC).

The appeal, filed through Attorney-at-Law Sanath Wijewardena, argues that the High Court misinterpreted facts and overlooked defense evidence, claiming the sentence is unlawful.

Aluthgamage seeks to nullify the judgment and be acquitted.

The case, initiated by the Bribery Commission in 2019, also saw former Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando sentenced to 25 years for the same offense.
