19 Oct 2025

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Friday (17) for discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation between Sri Lanka and India in education, digital governance, and socio-economic development.

The meeting marked Dr. Amarasuriya’s first official visit to India since assuming office. Officials described the discussions as substantive, with both sides seeking to deepen cooperation beyond traditional trade and aid.

Education was a key focus. Prime Minister Modi expressed India’s support for Sri Lanka’s education reform programme, while Dr. Amarasuriya outlined her plans to create an inclusive education system addressing school dropouts and gender-related challenges. Earlier in the day, she visited her alma mater, Hindu College, University of Delhi, and toured a model school to study India’s education practices.

The two leaders also discussed collaboration in digital transformation. Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to assist the Sri Lanka Unique Digital ID initiative and to strengthen digital governance. Both sides agreed on the importance of using technology to improve public services and promote transparency.

Fishermen’s issues in the Palk Strait were also raised, with Dr. Amarasuriya calling for solutions that protected livelihoods while ensuring maritime safety.

Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s continued support for development projects in Sri Lanka, including the sacred city complex in Anuradhapura.

A day earlier, Dr. Amarasuriya met India’s Minister of External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar for talks on trade, investment, and connectivity. She encouraged Indian investment in manufacturing, infrastructure, and education.

Dr. Amarasuriya also addressed the NDTV World Summit 2025 in New Delhi, where she spoke about Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and democratic renewal. She acknowledged India’s support during Sri Lanka’s 2022 financial crisis and called for stronger regional cooperation based on shared prosperity.
