Many Sri Lankans planning to travel abroad for various purposes are currently facing difficulties due to the unavailability of the Meningococcal vaccine, which is required to prevent Meningitis (an inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and the spinal cord), claimed the Medical and Civil Rights Professional Association of Doctors (MCPA).

Speaking to The Daily Morning, MCPA President Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa said that several countries have made this vaccine compulsory for those travelling to regions where Meningitis is considered a major public health issue. In some cases, he said, it is also a requirement when applying for employment, particularly in countries that have experienced repeated outbreaks.

“This vaccine is usually available at the Medical Research Institute in Borella, and leading hospitals across the country. However, many individuals planning to travel abroad for various purposes such as employment and education are facing various difficulties now. Due to the shortage of this vaccine in both Government and private healthcare services, they face difficulties in applying for visas or trying to enter certain countries where proof of the Meningococcal vaccination is a mandatory requirement,” he added.

Speaking further, Dr. Sanjeewa said that the shortage has continued because of long-standing issues in the functioning of the Medical Supplies Division (MSD), which is responsible for ensuring a steady supply of medicines. He pointed out that although several court orders have been issued directing the relevant agencies including the MSD to regulate and ensure the availability of essential medicines, proper steps have not been taken to resolve the issue.

The Secretary to the Ministry of Health Dr. Anil Jasinghe was not available for comment.
