Hirunika’s protest case adjourned till May

As per the Colombo Magistrate’s Court orders yesterday (13), the case related to the protest launched by Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya National Organiser and former MP Hirunika Premachandra in the Colombo 7 area on 14 November 2022 was adjourned until 6 May 2023.

The case was taken up yesterday before Colombo Magistrate Prasanna Alwis, who also ordered the relevant media institution to submit the unedited footage of the incident to the investigating officers.

Premachandra – who led a protest march calling to end violence against women in view of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated in November – and 14 other supporters were arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens Police on 14 November 2022.

They were then produced before Colombo Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe on 15 November 2022. The Magistrate ordered their release on cash bails of Rs. 10,000 each and surety bails of Rs. 5 million each. They were also ordered to appear at the Cinnamon Gardens Police Station on the last Sunday of every month.
