SLCERT warns of fake bank alert credit card scams

30 Jan 2026 | BY Staff Writer

Sri Lanka CERT has warned of a rise in credit card scams using fake SMS messages and online alerts claiming cards are suspended due to suspicious activity.

CERT stated that victims are directed to links and asked to enter personal details, including NIC numbers, and scammers then obtain OTPs to steal funds.

It noted that fraudsters have also impersonated police officers through WhatsApp video calls, threatening arrest and pressuring victims to transfer money.

Sri Lanka CERT advised the public not to share sensitive information through unknown links or calls and to verify alerts directly with banks.
